Transportation represents a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions in the province and is the second largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada. One way to reduce the amount of transportation-related GHG emissions is to put more zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road.
New Brunswick's goal is to have 20,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by the year 2030. This is achievable given that electric vehicles are now within reach for more New Brunswickers, especially with the help of rebates from the Government of NB and the Government of Canada.
New Brunswick Electric Vehicle Rebate Program, Plug-In NB
NB Power is working on behalf of the Government of New Brunswick to encourage New Brunswick drivers to consider an electric vehicle when they purchase or lease their next car. If we replace gas cars with electric vehicles, we can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that come from the vehicles we drive.
Under this program New Brunswick residents and eligible organizations who purchase or lease an eligible new EV or purchase an eligible used EV can receive rebates. Rebates are available when you buy your car from participating NB car dealers. Those who buy an eligible vehicle can also receive a rebate on the purchase and installation of an eligible home charging station.
Rebates are available for eligible Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs) that were purchased or leased after July 8, 2021. To learn more and apply for your rebate visit the NB Power website.
New and qualified electric vehicles are eligible for both a federal rebate from the Government of Canada’s iZEV Program and provincial Plug-In NB rebates. You can get up to $10,000 when these are combined!
There are dozens of electric vehicles that qualify for rebates, including SUVs and vans!
How long will the program last?
Plug-In NB – Electric Vehicle Rebates is projected to be a three-year program. Rebates are provided on a first come, first served basis and will remain available until the program budget is used or the program is done.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for an EV rebate, you must:
- Live in New Brunswick or own an organization based here. Businesses registered in New Brunswick, non-profit organizations, municipal governments, and First Nations are also eligible.
- Buy or lease from a qualifying auto dealer in New Brunswick
- Buy a used EV from a licensed dealer outside of New Brunswick
Which vehicles are eligible?
Used vehicles are only eligible for incentives through Plug-in NB and vehicles must be battery electric (BEV) or plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) and fall within a specified price range.
New Brunswick’s Plug-In NB program uses the vehicle eligibility list that is maintained by Transport Canada’s Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program. Before purchasing a new vehicle be sure to check the list to verify it is eligible. New vehicles will qualify for incentives from both Plug-in NB and the federal iZEV program. Incentives for new vehicles can be up to $10,000.
The Government of Canada’s iZEV program encourages the purchase and use of Zero-Emission Vehicles. There are many different makes and models of eligible zero-emission vehicles for purchase or lease and you may qualify for an incentive of up to $5,000.
